The History of Turkish Coffee
Turkish coffee is a style of coffee prepared in a cezve using very finely ground coffee beans without filtering1. It is said that Turkish coffee was introduced to the Ottoman Empire by Özdemir Pasha, the governor of Yemen, who wanted to impress Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent in the 16th century2. The Sultan enjoyed the drink and soon it became popular among the elite and the masses. Turkish coffee was brewed in a special pot called an cezve and served in a small cup called a finjan1. Turkish coffee was often flavoured with cardamom, mastic, salep, or ambergris1.
Turkish coffee culture also involved social and ritual aspects, such as fortune-telling by reading the coffee grounds, or serving coffee to guests as a sign of hospitality1. Turkish coffee houses were places where people gathered to chat, play games, read books, or listen to music2. However, some rulers saw the coffee houses as a threat to their authority and tried to ban them or impose taxes on them2. Turkish coffee also spread to other parts of the world, such as Europe, where it influenced the development of other coffee styles, such as espresso3.
